How to Reduce Stress Naturally with the Emotional Needs Audit

It can sometimes be difficult to put your finger on exactly what is making you feel bad. This handy tool can help you focus on areas in your life that are causing the most distress.

The Emotional Needs Audit is a quick exercise—don’t overthink it. Just answer the questions as best you can. In the therapy room, I go into much more detail with clients to set goals and dig deeper into the areas that need attention.

 

How to Use the Emotional Needs Audit

The idea is to identify where you score 3 or below. Any answers at this level suggest areas that may need some work.

For example:

  • A score of 3 in Security might indicate concerns about money or stability, helping you focus on setting financial goals to improve your situation.
  • A score of 3 in Intimacy could mean you’re not seeing enough of close friends who provide emotional support.
  • A score of 3 in Control might suggest feeling overwhelmed in certain situations, such as work or family life.

Becoming aware of these issues is the first step in finding ways to improve them. Life can be challenging at times, but even small steps in the right areas can help reduce stress symptoms.
